Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice (or water)
  • Gel food coloring (red, pink, white)
  • Heart-shaped sprinkles and edible glitter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until creamy and fluffy.
  3. Add in the egg and vanilla extract, beating until fully combined.
  4. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, stirring until a dough starts to form.
  6. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out to about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Cut out cookies using heart-shaped cookie cutters.
  8. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes.
  9. Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.
  10. Beat the egg whites or meringue powder with powdered sugar and lemon juice until stiff peaks form for royal icing.
  11. Divide the icing into bowls and color with gel food colors.
  12. Decorate each cookie with royal icing and optional sprinkles.
  13. Allow the icing to dry completely before serving or packaging.
