- 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 4 slices rye bread
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and sauté until golden and caramelized, about 12-15 minutes.
- Remove the caramelized onions from heat and set aside.
- Form the ground beef into two large patties, seasoning both sides generously with salt and pepper.
- Cook the patties in a separate skillet or grill over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side.
- Combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper in a small bowl to create the secret sauce.
- Butter one side of each slice of rye bread, placing them butter-side down in the skillet.
- Spread a layer of secret sauce on the unbuttered sides of the bread. Add a slice of Swiss cheese, followed by the beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese.
- Add the second slice of bread on top, buttered side facing up.
- Grill the sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted.
- Remove from heat, slice, serve, and enjoy!
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding sautéed mushrooms or switching up the cheese. Whole grain rye bread can provide a heartier texture.
