Ingredients

- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon

- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Royal icing (2 large egg whites, 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 tsp lemon juice)
- Food coloring for decoration (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
- Cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg, molasses, and vanilla, mixing until smooth.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
- Divide the dough in half, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Roll out the chilled dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut shapes with cookie cutters.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until golden, then cool on a wire rack.
- Beat the egg whites, powdered sugar, and lemon juice to make royal icing.
- Decorate the cookies with icing, creating winter village designs.
- Let the icing harden for 1-2 hours before serving.
Notes
Chill cookie dough to prevent spreading. Use parchment paper for easy baking.
