A timeless dessert featuring a velvety red cake with a rich cream cheese frosting, perfect for any celebration.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  7. Beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar until the frosting is thick and fluffy.
  8. Frost the first cake layer, add the second layer, and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
  9. Slice and serve the cake.

Notes

Ensure ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing. For added moisture, consider using cake flour.
