Description

A hearty dish combining savory ground beef with soft, fluffy dumplings for a comforting family meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (85 percent lean)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas or mixed vegetables (optional)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for dumplings)
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder (for dumplings)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for dumplings)
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened (for dumplings)
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2 percent, for dumplings)

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef by heating a large skillet over medium heat, adding the ground beef, and breaking it apart until no longer pink.
  2. Add the diced onion and sauté for about four minutes until soft and translucent; then, add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. Incorporate the tomato paste, mixing it evenly with the beef, then sprinkle the flour over the mixture and cook for another minute.
  4. Pour in the beef broth gradually, stirring to ensure a smooth mixture, and add thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper; let it simmer for 8-10 minutes.
  5. Prepare the dumpling dough by whisking together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl, then incorporating the softened butter.
  6. Drop the dumpling dough using a spoon onto the simmering beef mixture, in 6-8 generous portions.
  7. Steam the dumplings by covering the skillet with a lid and reducing heat to low for about 15 minutes.
  8. Check for doneness after 15 minutes, ensuring the dumplings are light and airy; allow to stand uncovered for five minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding Worcestershire sauce, fresh herbs as garnishes, or nutritional boosts like chopped spinach.
