- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9-inch round cake pan by greasing and flouring it.
- Whisk together the flour, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, baking soda, and salt in a mixing bowl.
- Beat the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, then add the eggs one at a time and mix in the molasses.
- Incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, alternating with the hot water.
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool the cake in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Mix the powdered sugar, butter, milk, and vanilla extract for the frosting until smooth.
- Frost the cooled cake generously with the prepared frosting.
Notes
For a lighter version, substitute applesauce for some of the butter and consider using whole wheat flour.
