Description

A delightful medley of tender shrimp enveloped in a crispy, golden coating that’s bursting with flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb small raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp hot sauce
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.33 cup cornstarch
  • 0.5 cup fine cornmeal
  • 0.75 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1.5 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 0.25 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 0.5 tsp baking powder
  • 1.25 tsp kosher salt (divided)
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 3 cups vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the shrimp: Rinse under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Marinate: In a medium bowl, combine buttermilk and hot sauce. Add shrimp, cover, and let marinate in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Create the coating: In a shallow dish, mix flour, cornstarch, cornmeal, panko breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, and baking powder until well combined.
  4. Heat the oil: In a large skillet, pour vegetable oil and heat to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Coat the shrimp: Dredge marinated shrimp in the coating mixture, ensuring they are fully covered.
  6. Fry the shrimp: Carefully add shrimp in small batches to the hot oil, frying for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Drain and serve: Remove fried shrimp and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Maintain oil temperature for even cooking. Try adding herbs or different spices to the coating for variety.
