Description

Tender meatballs infused with the rich, aromatic flavor of French onion soup, topped with gooey Gruyère cheese.


Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups French onion soup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the meatballs: Mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, garlic, dried thyme, oregano, salt, and pepper in a large bowl until well combined. Shape into meatballs about one inch in diameter.
  2. Brown the meatballs: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, add the meatballs, and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Transfer to the crock pot.
  3. Prepare the sauce: Whisk together French onion soup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and fresh thyme in a separate bowl. Pour over meatballs in the crock pot.
  4. Cook the meatballs: Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours or high for 2-3 hours until tender.
  5. Finish the dish: Sprinkle Gruyère cheese over the meatballs 10 minutes before serving, cover to melt cheese.
  6. Serve and enjoy: Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or on their own, garnished with extra fresh thyme.

Notes

Consider adding red pepper flakes for heat. Use gluten-free breadcrumbs for a gluten-free option.
