Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for spreading)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (for icing)
- 2 tbsp milk (for icing)
Instructions
- Begin by activating the yeast. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast, stirring until completely dissolved. Allow the mixture to sit for about five minutes, or until it becomes bubbly and frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour and salt. Next, pour in your yeast mixture, softened butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir until blended, then transfer the dough to a floured surface.
- Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic. Once done, place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp towel, and allow it to rise in a warm spot for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air and roll it out into a rectangle, measuring approximately 16×12 inches.
- Spread the melted butter generously over the dough, followed by an even sprinkling of brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Starting from one edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Slice the log into 12 even pieces and place them in the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown.
- While they’re baking, prepare your icing! In a mixing bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until you achieve a smooth, creamy consistency.
- Once the rolls have cooled slightly, spread the icing generously on top and serve warm.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding chopped nuts or raisins to the filling. You can prepare the rolls the night before and let them rise in the fridge.
